'Cover Up' campaign has community support

People on probation have been sewing scarves made from fabric donated by businesses in Belgrave to encourage Asian women to cover up their jewellery.

The, “Cover Up,” campaign is the idea of PC 4312 Laura Nutt, PCSO 6390 Kaajal Jethwa and Pc 4584 Donna Hyde who are part of the Latimer and Belgrave Dedicated Neighbourhood Team (DNT). The team has done a lot of work already to reduce a seasonal increase in gold chain snatches during the warmer months, they've been talking to local people in community centres and temples to urge them to cover up their jewellery when they are out and about or not wear it at all. They’ve also been giving out crime prevention leaflets in different languages and working with jewellery shops who have been giving leaflets to customers when they buy jewellery.

PC Nutt said, “We wanted to do something different that would help us get our message across and we came up with the scarf idea. We then approached local sari shops and tailors to ask if they could donate spare fabric to the project and we had a great response. Once we had the fabric we then had to find someone to make it into scarves. We approached the Probation Service on Cobden Street who were thrilled to help us.”

The scarves are being made by men and women who are completing an unpaid work order otherwise known as Community Payback. This is supervised by the Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire and Rutland Community Rehabilitation Company (DLNR CRC). It has established a work room with five electric sewing machines to help people complete their unpaid reparation work. They produce a range of fabric items which are sold to raise funds for local charities.

Supervisor Maddie Shipley explained that both men and women work in the sewing room and this option enables the DLNR CRC to provide an option for some individuals who may not be able to undertake manual work in the community.

“They are undertaking their reparation work and learning new skills at the same time,” said Maddie Shipley. “We’ve had a few people who have gone on to find work sewing in the textile industry. Finding paid employment reduces the risk that someone will re-offend again in the future.”

PC Nutt continued; “We are going to visit local women’s groups and give the scarves to women and talk to them about why we are giving them out and how they can keep themselves safe and their jewellery out of sight. We understand that it is important to Asian women to wear their jewellery and this scheme is a perfect way of enabling them to do that and keep it safe at the same time. It is also a great example of the police, local businesses and the Probation Service working together and we would like to thank everyone who has worked with us to make this happen.”

Crawley man sentenced to 12 years for sexually assaulting two young women

A Crawley man has been sentenced to a total of 12 years imprisonment for sexually assaulting two teenage girls in the town.

22-year old Ronald Motlhokodise, of Lansbury Road, Broadfield, Crawley, was sentenced at Lewes Crown Court on Thursday (30 July) having been convicted of both offences on 30 June after a six-day trial.

He had raped a 16-year old girl who he had met only days beforehand, after enticing her to his home on 20 August 2013. Police arrested and charged him with that offence.

In the early hours of 3 March this year, whilst on court bail awaiting trial for that offence, he met a 17-year old girl outside a hotel in Crawley High Street at which they were both staying, followed her back into her room and subjected her to a vicious sexual assault.

Hie was issued with a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) to last until further notice severely restricting his contact with women, and will be a registered sex offender for life.

Detective Constable Natalie Freeman said; "Motlhokodise is clearly a danger to young women he encounters. These were both casual acquaintances, in the second case he met the victim just minutes before he attacked her.

"Both had to give evidence at the trial, although we enabled some special measures to be put in place to help lessen that ordeal, including her evidence being given by video link, followed by court cross-examination from behind screens so that they did not have to see the defendant.

"Their evidence was compelling and clearly satisfied the jury that Motlhokodise carried out both attacks.

"This case shows that victims of rape and other serious sexual assualts will be supported through the investigation, and that justice can be achieved for them."
